Fans are going into a frenzy over the long-anticipated release of the new film in the wildly popular "28 Days Later" franchise. The Danny Boyle directed "28 Years Later" stars British favourites Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes, following their characters 28 years after the original film, as they leave the safety of their remote island and head back to the British mainland.

What they find there is not only more flesh-eating zombies, but also, other survivors. So, how did they stay safe from hungry zombies all this time? It can only be down to some smart home improvements, and now there is a helpful guide to help you prepare, too!

An expert from MyBuilder.com, the reliable way to hire tradespeople, has prepared a handy guide for those who'd like to get their homes in tip top zombie-proof condition. And while it seems unlikely that we have to worry about an impending zombie apocalypse, us Brits like to be safe rather than sorry. From walls to wells, there's a comprehensive list to keep you safe and sound while you wait out the war between alive and undead.

Andy Simms, property expert from MyBuilder.com, said these measures would be useful, whatever the disastrous situation - and some will ensure excellent home security all year round.

"I can't say that I'm currently concerned about building a survival bunker, but if I was, there are some clear steps I would consider taking.

"I always say that preparation is key to success, so why not plan ahead? Prices are only going up, so getting zombie-proofed now makes financial sense, as well as lowering your risk of having your brains eaten."

MyBuilder.com's tips include:

Build a 10ft wall

Zombies are not renowned for their climbing abilities, therefore a good-sized wall around your property should keep them at bay. It's also useful for keeping out any unwanted visitors that aren't trying to bite you.

Fences and trenches

Instead of a wall you could go for a good 8ft fence (possibly with barbed wire on top and a deep trench in front of it). That should keep them out, although it might make it difficult for any delivery men.

Deadbolts, extra locks and secure windows

Zombies hunt in packs and once they get a sniff of a way to get in, they will all follow. Ensure your doors and windows are always secure and have additional locks installed - not only will this keep the zombies out, but could bring down your home insurance premiums.

Install a temperature-controlled larder for food and water

If a zombie apocalypse does take place, you may be required to sit tight for a while. Therefore, you will need to ensure you have enough food and water supplies to survive - temperature-controlled storage will also help these items last as long as possible. The mains power might go out, so to keep this running you'll need a good source of power via solar panels.

High-tech security gear

CCTV, spotlights, trip sensors and night vision cameras will all help notify you when any zombies attack. The sooner you know zombies are on their way, the sooner you can plan your escape. Also useful for avoiding any other uninvited guests, like nosy neighbours or your in-laws.

Build a well

A continuous source of fresh water would be invaluable in a siege situation, so if it's possible, build yourself a well. And if those zombies do get in, it's a good place to push them in (although, it would pollute your water source, so try and avoid it if you can.)

Install a bunker/safehouse

If the zombies do penetrate your home then you'll need to get you and your family somewhere safe and secure. This could be built under your home or in a secure area of your garden. Make sure you get an architect or structural engineer to plan this out - and ensure you have the correct permissions, or you'll be facing the wrath of your local authorities as well as flesh-eating zombies.

Build a treehouse/security tower

While zombies of recent movies can run, most don't appear to be able to climb trees. Install yourself a lofty security tower to survey the hordes - you could get a carpenter to fit one, and kids could enjoy it in the meantime. If the apocalypse happens, you'll have a great vantage point, and a good place to attack zombies once they arrive. You normally need planning permission, but maybe not in an apocalypse!

Escape route

Another option to a bunker or safehouse is to plan and install an escape route. The easiest route would perhaps be a tunnel under your house into your neighbour's home, or to a nearby safe area, although be aware  that it could potentially let them directly into your home!

Keep it burning

If you really want to ensure your safety, a flame tower is the ultimate in home defence. Coming in at a measly £100k to install, can you really afford not to? Planning permission, however, may be an issue, so we'd recommend applying as soon as possible. Plus, you'll need an industrial supply of gas and a gang of CORGI registered gas installers - and with the national shortage of tradespeople, you'll want to book ahead. And beyond cremating zombie remains, this tool also keeps down heating costs in winter!
