Gas hob, coffee machine & multiple ovens: Our dream kitchen features revealed

  • A gas hob is the feature Brits want the most in their dream kitchen
  • A fifth of people plan on redesigning their kitchen within the next year
  • We value having a coffee machine higher than having SMART products or a kitchen island

New research has revealed over a quarter of Brits would enjoy spending more time in their kitchen if it was modernised, and that coffee machines and islands rank higher in preferred features than SMART technology.

The study by German kitchen manufacturer, Kutchenhaus, asked 2,005 Brits about the features they’d like in their dream kitchen as we look to keep up with the latest trends.

Despite spending more than an hour everyday cooking*, almost three quarters of Brits are not proud of their kitchen (74%) and a fifth plan on redesigning it within the next year. Results from Kutchenhaus’ dream kitchen study show features at the top of the list when it comes to redesigning, as well as luxury necessities that take place over advanced technology.

The top 10 most wanted dream-kitchen features

  1. Gas hob – 58%
  2. Washing machine – 56%
  3. Dishwasher – 53%
  4. Coffee machine – 47%
  5. Induction hob – 42%
  6. An island – 43%
  7. More than one oven – 41%
  8. Smart fridge – 38%
  9. Smart lighting – 38%
  10. Food waste composter – 36%

Top of the list for dream kitchen features is a gas hob with nearly three in five (58%) stating this, making it substantially more popular than an induction hob which is wanted by 42%. Benefits of having a gas hob include being able to control the temperature more easily, and the usage costs being lower than an induction hob.

Despite cooking and entertaining being the main focus of the kitchen, the second and third most desired elements are practicality focussed - a modern washing machine (56%) and a dishwasher (53%).

Following this is the need for barista style drinks at home with just under half (47%) saying there must be a coffee machine in their dream kitchen.

SMART products are also highly desired on the list with both a SMART fridge (38%) and lighting (38%) wanted to help ease our time in the kitchen. As nearly a quarter (24%) of us have worked from our kitchen during the past year, the demand for SMART lighting could be down to the usefulness of it when on a video call or to adjust with daylight changes.

As we look for a modern kitchen, 30% are dreaming of having touch screen devices in their kitchen and an additional 28% require them to be wireless. An automatic hand soap dispenser is wanted by more than a quarter (27%).

When it comes to finding inspiration for a dream kitchen 22% are watching homes and property TV shows every week to provide this.

Also being looked at weekly to help inspire people for their new kitchens are Instagram and Pinterest with more than a fifth (21%) taking to the picture led sites. Trends can easily be found on Instagram and there are over 50,000 images of SMART kitchens along with 32,000 boiling water tap images.

Dan Evers of Kutchenhaus comments: “With the events of the past year and all the time we have spent in the kitchen, it is no surprise so many people are looking to update their kitchen.

“We generally think of technology when it comes to dream kitchens but what’s fascinating to see from our research is that people are looking to show off their cooking skills by desiring extra ovens and gas hobs. This all points to our love of cooking dictating the core design of our kitchens with SMART appliances added in to make our time spent here more efficient.”
